It's a safe bet that Redskins right guard Randy Thomas will tip the scales a little heavier today when Washington faces the New York Giants.

Washington placed a sign in the locker room last week advising players on food and drinks to stay away from on Thanksgiving and during the holiday season.

Said the 6-foot-5, 317-pound Thomas, "Look, I don't live by that. I live to be happy. I eat fried chicken. You're going to tell me that's living dangerously?"

Tale of 2 teams

The NFL is on a record pace for scoring, with a lot of help -- and hurt -- from the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams have allowed 344 points through 11 games, a pace that would produce a yield of 500 points. The NFL record is 533 points allowed by the 1981 Baltimore Colts. The only other team that gave up 500 points in a season was the 1966 New York Giants (501).

The Rams' offense isn't helping the NFL's cause, though. St. Louis has scored 147 points, the lowest total in the league.

HE said it

"I'm a playoff system guy. I just, I hate those computers. I don't know how they can really justify who's the national champion unless they do it on the field. It doesn't make any sense to me." - Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on college Football's BCS system.

Here's one positive from the Lions' mess of a season: With his 53-yard field goal Thursday, Jason Hanson tied Morten Andersen's NFL record for the most kicks from 50-plus yards with 40.

More numbers

Through Week 12, the Cowboys were penalized 84 times. That's a pace for 122 penalties. The only team in the Super Bowl era to win a championship with 120 or more penalties was the 1983 Raiders at 121.
