SI scribe: Season will depend on Matt Hasselbeck's back
May 11, 2009 (The Seattle Times delivered by Newstex ) --

Sports Illustrated's Peter King gave an offseason power ranking of sorts and listed the Seahawks at No. 19 of the league's 32 teams, seven spots below the Arizona Cardinals . Here's King's synopsis of Seattle.

Hard not to like what the Seahawks have done in the offseason, replacing the declining Julian Peterson and Rocky Bernard with Aaron Curry at linebacker and defensive-line-rotation pieces Colin Cole and Cory Redding. T.J. Houshmandzadeh's a very good addition, but he's not really much different than Bobby Engram, other than he should be able to stay healthier than Engram. But this team will sink or swim on the back of Matt Hasselbeck. Jim Mora told me in about 16 different ways Hasselbeck's back is fine. Hasselbeck has echoed that repeatedly, but let's see how he holds up when the real games start.???-- Peter King, CNNSI.com

Here's a link to King's full column.

Hasselbeck feels he's in better shape and he has worked on his core muscles, strengthening his torso to prevent a recurrence.

The reality is that Hasselbeck is just one of three players Seattle is relying upon to return from injury.

Left tackle Walter Jones has is coming back from microfracture surgery on his knee and defensive end Patrick Kerney is returning from shoulder surgery. Those are three of the most important players on the team and all are in their 30s. Can Seattle expect all three to return and stay healthy?

Now, all the information from the team says the trio are going to be ready for the season. President Tim Ruskell said Jones has hit all the marks in his rehabilitation program. Kerney underwent a procedure to remove bone chips from his elbow, but is expected to be ready for training camp.

But the health of that trio is going to have a large impact on Seattle's season.
