Seattle Seahawks Strategy and Personnel 2009-02-28
TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

Seattle already started the process of its established goal of retaining its players by franchising linebacker Leroy Hill. Now the team will begin to focus on the rest of the unrestricted free agents the team would like to bring back, including fullback Leonard Weaver and offensive lineman Ray Will and Floyd Womack.

Seattle needs to address injury issues at wide receiver and offensive line, along with bringing in a quarterback of the future to eventually replace aging quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

On defense, the Seahawks could use another run stuffer, along with more size and speed in the secondary.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Wide receiver: With veteran receiver Bobby Engram finishing as the team's top receiver with only 47 receptions, the Seahawks need to add an explosive playmaker, along with other receivers like Deion Branch and Nate Burleson staying healthy.

2. Offensive line: Veteran Pro Bowler Walter Jones is coming off of microfracture knee surgery, and Seattle should think about drafting his eventual replacement.

3. Defensive tackle: Another run stuffer and pass rusher to pair with Brandon Mebane will help keep offensive lineman off the team's group of talented linebackers so they can make plays.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: LB Leroy Hill: Tendered at 8.304M.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--DT Rocky Bernard had been productive for Seattle up until last season, but might not be a fit in the Seahawks revamped defense.

--WR Bobby Engram missed the first three games of the season with a cracked shoulder blade and only finished with 47 catches for 489 yards and no touchdowns in 2008.

--QB Charlie Frye started one game and struggled, finishing 12 of 23 for 83 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 27-17 loss to Green Bay.

--DT Howard Green was used as a backup in spot duty and should receive another training camp invitation.

--TE Will Heller is a good blocking tight end, and serves as a nice complement to pass-catching tight end John Carlson.

--LB D.D. Lewis proved a valuable backup that knows Seattle's defensive scheme.

--LB Wesley Mallard finished on the injured reserve with an injured hamstring.

--C Steve McKinney was picked up at midseason to help add depth to an offensive line decimated by injures.

--LS Jeff Robinson filled in nicely when rookie Tyler Schmitt suffered a back injury during training camp. Seattle may lean on him again in 2009

--WR Koren Robinson was productive in spurts but does not have the top-end speed he possessed early in his career. May be off to greener pastures.

--FB Leonard Weaver has improved as a blocker and gives the team versatility with his pass-catching and running ability. Other teams may be interested, including NFC West rival San Francisco.

--OT Ray Willis plays with a mean streak and started 10 games at both right guard and right tackle. May command more money than team is willing to pay him.

--OT Floyd Womack was healthy for the first time in several years and showed his versatility by playing both right guard and left guard. He should be back.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS (not tendered)

--LB Lance Laury (not tendered as RFA) was a valuable special teams player for Seattle.
