Seattle Seahawks Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30

Seattle Seahawks Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30
The Seahawks would never say that they would prefer to have backup Seneca Wallace in over starter Matt Hasselbeck, but Wallace does provide something against the Eagles' blitzing defense that Hasselbeck does not: mobility.

The Eagles are fourth in the league in sacks, sending any number of combinations at quarterbacks. Wallace has the athleticism to escape the pressure, something that he displayed against San Francisco last week.

There seems to be very little upside at all to Patrick Kerney leaving the lineup and being replaced by rookie defensive end Lawrence Jackson, with Baraka Atkins being added to the rotation.

Kerney is first on the team and 8th in the NFC with five sacks, plus had a fumble recovery and return of 50 yards last week. Jackson has only two sacks, both in the second game of the season, and was sent to the bench after five games because of a lack of production.

PLAYER NOTES

--QB Matt Hasselbeck is out with a bulging disc in his back.

--DE Patrick Kerney is likely out with a shoulder injury.

--LB Lofa Tatupu has a strained groin and will practice this week but may play against the Eagles on Sunday.

--TE Will Heller has a sprained knee and is out.

--WR Deion Branch has a bruised heel and is out.

--WR Koren Robinson missed Wednesday's practice with a sore knee but will play. He regularly takes Wednesdays off.

--FB Leonard Weaver missed Wednesday's practice with a sore foot but will play in Sunday's game against Philadelphia.

GAME PLAN: The Seahawks must create turnovers and make the big plays to have a chance against one of the better teams in the league. They won the last two games against Philadelphia because they got so many turnovers, including three interceptions by Lofa Tatupu last season, which keeps the Eagles' talented offense, featuring Brian Westbrook, off the field.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Seahawks QB Seneca Wallace vs. Eagles pass rush - Wallace has the ability to scramble and break free from pass rushers. Philadelphia is fourth in the league with 23 sacks.

Eagles passing game vs. Seahawks secondary: Philadelphia's passing attack ranks fourth in the league at 260 yards per game. Seattle's pass defense ranks 30th in the league, allowing 245 yards per game.

INJURY IMPACT: LB Lofa Tatupu will not practice all week because of a strained groin and is likely to be affected if he plays, as expected. D.D. Lewis will step in if Tatupu is unable to go. Tatupu has had four interceptions in the past two games against Philadelphia.
