REPORT CARD AFTER 3 GAMES
PASSING OFFENSE: D -- Through only some fault of his own, QB Matt Hasselbeck has completed less than 50 percent of his passes and has a 60.1 passer rating. Of course, the offense has lost its top six wide receivers to injury and at one point was unable to run a four-receiver set; one of the receivers in that game had been plucked off the street only three days earlier.
RUSHING OFFENSE: A -- The Seahawks have made marked improvement in a running game that was revamped in the offseason. It is averaging 166 yards a game, which is fourth in the NFL. Julius Jones has emerged as the go-to back, going over 100 yards in each of his last two games. And T.J. Duckett has been a formidable short-yardage back and leads the team with three TDs.
PASS DEFENSE: D -- What was supposed to be the strongest part of the team has been burned by almost everything thrown at them. Even on a day that the pass rush got eight sacks of San Francisco QB J.T. O'Sullivan, the journeyman QB had a big day. Kelly Jennings has been beaten deep three times, and 38-year-old Isaac Bruce made Seattle's pass defense, which ranks 25th in the league, look feeble.
RUSH DEFENSE: B -- The Seahawks' defense has allowed only 88 yards a game, ninth in the NFL, and limited Rams' back Steven Jackson and San Francisco's Frank Gore to meager days. It has created three fumbles and is limiting opponents to a 3.5-yard average per carry.
SPECIAL TEAMS: D -- Seattle already has cut punter Ryan Plackemeier and replaced him with Jon Ryan. It has given up a long punt return to Buffalo's Roscoe Parrish for a TD. It has had a field goal blocked. The biggest positive has been place kicker Olindo Mare, who has made all his field goal and extra point attempts.
COACHING: C -- This team should not have lost at home to San Francisco, and it seemed ill-prepared against Buffalo in the season opener. Having said all that, it has handled the adversity of multiple injuries relatively well and despite the two losses remains only a half game back in the NFC West. The upcoming stretch of games against talented teams will likely determine the season.
