Seattle Seahawks Notes, Quotes 2009-02-24
--New offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who worked as the offensive coordinator in Atlanta when Jim Mora was the head coach there, says Seattle will switch to more of a zone blocking scheme up front, similar to the blocking scheme ex-Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan executed with much success over the years. However, Knapp said the Seahawks also will run some man and power blocking schemes up front along with the zone blocking plays.

Knapp said he'll also rely on two backs carrying the load offensively, with those two guys most likely being T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones. Duckett played for Knapp while in Atlanta.

"I think it's important, because the game has gotten so physical," Knapp said about using multiple backs. "The defense has gotten so strong and so fast; it's hard for one back to carry the load. So I'm a big believer in having two, if not three backs involved as the season goes on, in the system."

--Jacksonville wide receiver Reggie Williams, a University of Washington product, could be interested in returning home to play for the Seattle Seahawks next season. Williams has a clause in his contract that allows him to opt out of his deal and become a free agent at the end of February. And along with growing up in the Seattle area, Williams has a tie to the team, with former Jacksonville assistant wide receivers coach Robert Prince now the receivers coach in Seattle.

"Of course, I'd like to come back and play for the Seahawks," Williams said. "I'd definitely like to come back to the West Coast and play. It seems like I haven't been over there in so long. I went from one extreme to the next when you go from Seattle to Florida. So the West Coast is definitely an option."

A first round draft pick selected ninth overall by Jacksonville in 2004, Williams never lived up to expectations for the Jaguars. The fifth-year receiver started 11 games and finished with 37 receptions for 364 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had his best year as a pro in 2007, finishing with 38 receptions for 629 yards and 10 touchdowns.

But at 6-foot-4, 212 pounds, Williams could provide a big target for Seattle. Perhaps a change of scenery and a return to his Northwest roots could help turn Williams' fortunes around.

Prince was diplomatic in his assessment of how Williams would fit in with the Seahawks.

"We had a good relationship," Prince said. "For whatever reason, it hasn't turned out as well as he wanted. And I know he's a free agent and I do have a relationship with him, but we'll look at all the options with all of the guys."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think if Matt Hasselbeck is healthy for 16 weeks this team has a chance to do some special things because he's an outstanding player. And we'd love to see that happen. And right now all indications are that he's going to be fine." -- New Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora commenting on the importance of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck getting healthy.
