--Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren hired Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden as his offensive quality control coach in San Francisco when Gruden was an assistant at University of Pacific under Walt Harris. Gruden's father also was on San Francisco's staff at the time. "Obviously his father spoke very highly of his son," Holmgren said. Holmgren hired Gruden over Greg Knapp, now Oakland's offensive coordinator.
--LB Will Herring, who had been on the team's physically unable to perform list, participated in his first practice on Wednesday. He had been suffering from arthritis in his knee and ankles. He said the doctors gave him medicine that immediately cleared up the symptoms. He said he expects to be activated this week.
--The Seahawks have only one interception this season and have given up nine touchdowns through the air. They are minus-5 in turnover differential. "It's baffling," defensive coordinator John Marshall said. "We just have to make plays."
--Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren on Wednesday said that he is not sure what his future holds, but he did not rule out anything - including returning to coaching after a one-year sabbatical. "I don't know how I'm going to react," Holmgren said. "There's a possibility that, in the year off, life is so good, that I might want to just ride my motorcycle all the time and go to the beach. I don't know. My feeling is, I've worked so hard for most of my life that I'll probably get a little antsy. My feeling is, Kathy, as much as she loves me, will probably want me out of the house. So, we'll see where it takes us."
--It has been about 50 degrees in Seattle for the past month. They are playing their next game in Tampa Bay, where it is about 85 degrees. The Seahawks have not been to a venue where it has been hot yet. "We can't account for it, other than the fact that we talk about hydration and we've played down there," Holmgren said. "We've played them and we've played in warm climates before. They'll have all the stuff on the sidelines to try and keep them as cool as they can, but I think the players are kind of used to that. It doesn't shock them."
--Sunday's game against Tampa Bay will feature two former Seattle first-round picks who could be considered busts because of alcohol and legal issues: Koren Robinson and Jerramy Stevens. Robinson was re-signed by the Seahawks this season after their extensive injury issues at wide receiver, while Stevens was signed by Tampa Bay after the Seahawks refused to bring him back as a free agent.
--Former Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander signed a contract with Washington, where he will be reunited with Jim Zorn and Stump Mitchell. "Good for him," Holmgren said. "I've kind of been keeping an eye on him and I'm glad he is back playing."
BY THE NUMBERS: 36 -- The average number of rushing yards per game the Seahawks have improved by from last year to this year. It is fourth-best in the NFL.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's fun. It's always fun: night football. We know we're going into the lion's den just a little bit down there, but the players understand that. They know what it's all about. They'll give it their best." -- Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren on playing a nationally televised Sunday night game.
