Seattle Seahawks Notes, Quotes 2009-03-03
--DT Colin Cole has signed a five-year, $21 million deal with the Seahawks. A backup for the Packers, Cole will vie for a starting job for the Seahawks, who lost free agent Rocky Bernard to the Giants on Saturday. Green Bay's implementation of the 3-4 front made him expendable since, at 6-foot-1 and 330 pounds, he doesn't fit well at nose tackle or moving outside.

--Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree created some uncertainty at the top of the draft when it was revealed during the NFL combine that he had a slight stress fracture in his left foot that will require surgery. With the injury, Crabtree will not run the 40-yard dash and canceled his Pro Day in March. With the Seahawks signing T.J. Houshmandzadeh, they would appear to be out of the running to select Crabtree at No. 4 overall.

Seattle head coach Jim Mora said he hasn't evaluated Crabtree's film but looks forward to taking a closer look at the explosive receiver.

"From what I've seen on TV -- from television watching the games -- and I saw him yesterday at the weigh-in, and he certainly looks the part," Mora said. "He's a physical-looking kid. He's made big plays in big games. He's had tremendous production in college, but I don't know him personally and that's a part of the puzzle. Getting to know him and finding out what makes him tick."

--Five of Seattle's coaches ran workout drills during the combine in Indianapolis, including offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, assistant head coach/defensive line coach Dan Quinn, and linebackers coach Zerick Rollins. Mora said that experience should help his staff better evaluate players for the draft.

"That's just a little added insight into the kids and how they compete," Mora said. "Do they get nervous and how do they adjust to or how do they handle the pressure."

--Seattle general manager Tim Ruskell said he's happy with the new coaches added to the team's staff. He said having Mora already in place helped get the evaluation process done earlier and hire new coaches while other teams were figuring out who their head coaches would be.

"I'm very happy with both sides of the ball," he said. "We spent a lot of time talking about what he wanted those guys to look like -- the personalities and their makeup. And everyone knows it was kind of like him. That's what we wanted. High energy. Intelligence. Great enthusiasm. Passion. And so that was the filter all those guys were put through. And every time we felt good about all of them.

--Mora and Ruskell have worked together before in Atlanta, when Mora was the head coach and Ruskell served as the assistant general manager.

The two will be responsible for leading the Seahawks back to respectability after a dismal 4-12 season in 2008. Mora said previously working with Ruskell should make the decision-making process easier.

"We have a good relationship," Mora said. "I believe we see things the same way in general and if we do disagree we work it out. But I think it's very helpful."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It pisses you off (laughs). You know, we're all here. Why can't we just all get along? -- Seattle team president and general manager Tim Ruskell on players not working out at the NFL combine.
