The Seattle Seahawks' Jekyll and Hyde pass rush will take a severe hit this week when Pro Bowl defensive end Patrick Kerney will likely miss Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kerney injured the shoulder he had surgically repaired in the fourth quarter of Sunday's victory over the San Francisco 49ers. After the game, he had the shoulder tightly wrapped in an Ace bandage.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren on Monday said he thought Kerney would be available to play against the Eagles' eighth-ranked offense, but on Wednesday Holmgren said that diagnosis may have been premature.

"In talking with Patrick today, he's somewhat concerned," Holmgren said. "Oftentimes a player will say, 'No, I'm (OK).' They're pretty good about telling you what they think is going to happen, and he really doesn't know right now.

"Again, it's early, and we don't want to be too much gloom-and-doom, but it's pretty sore today. He won't be able to do much."

If Kerney, the team's leader in sacks with five, is unable to play, he will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Lawrence Jackson, though Jackson will be on the right side. Darryl Tapp, who had been playing the right, will slide to the left, where Kerney had been playing.

Kerney is not having the dominant type of season he had in 2007, when he was second in the NFC in sacks and was regularly dominating games.

But he is still the best pass rusher on the Seahawks' defense, and he demands double teams. Without him, the Eagles should be far less worried. Jackson has only two sacks this season, both coming in Week 2 against San Francisco, and Tapp has no sacks. Second-year vet Baraka Atkins will be moved into the rotation as well.

Defensive coordinator John Marshall said he will not game plan around the loss of Kerney, but he does have to be ready to make decisions on the fly if Tapp and Jackson are not productive.

"At this point, right now, it doesn't change," Marshall said. "During the game, if we feel we need to do something else, we will make adjustments. But LJ and Tapp and BA, they will get it done. They'll get it done."

That may be optimistic given that the Seahawks' pass rush, other than two games against San Francisco, has not really gotten it done all year.

The Seahawks are tied for sixth in the league with 19 sacks, but 13 of those have come against the Niners, eight in that first game.

Other than throwing J.T. O'Sullivan around rather regularly, the Seahawks have not gotten to the QB very often, part of the reason the pass defense is ranked 30th in the league, giving up 245 yards a game.

Marshall has been offering extra help, sending safeties on blitz packages, but twice this year the Seahawks have gotten beat for touchdowns during safety blitzed when the safeties did not get home.

SERIES HISTORY: 12th regular-season meeting. Eagles lead the regular-season series, 6-5, though Seattle has won the past two games, both of which have been in Philadelphia. The game in Philadelphia in 2005 was a nationally televised 42-0 thrashing when the Eagles were honoring Reggie White.
