Rookie Arnoux reportedly done for season
Fourth-round draft pick Stanley Arnoux ruptured his left Achilles tendon during the first practice of the Saints' rookie minicamp Friday morning.

He is expected to miss the 2009 season, according to a league source, but the Saints said they won't announce a recovery timetable until a later date. Arnoux will have surgery at some point next week.

The rookie outside linebacker from Wake Forest apparently suffered the injury while running toward the ball during the practice, which was held outdoors on a natural grass surface at the Saints' facility on Airline Drive.

The 6-foot, 232-pounder was expected to compete for playing time at weakside linebacker and on special teams.

Arnoux was one of four draft picks for the Saints this season. He was picked 118th overall -- two spots after New Orleans drafted fellow Demon Deacon Chip Vaughn, a safety and close friend who roomed with Arnoux during their freshman year.

Before he heard the full extent of Arnoux's injury Friday afternoon, Vaughn talked about how excited they were to share their rookie experience together.

"I've been talking to guys like (fellow Wake Forest draft picks Aaron Curry and Alphonso Smith), and they say they're so jealous of what we have down here," Vaughn said. "We're having fun."

Now it appears that Arnoux will have to count on Vaughn for a different kind of support.

Arnoux wasn't the only injury Friday morning. Tryout candidate John Halman, a receiver from Concordia College, also tore his Achilles tendon during what he called "routine drills."

Arnoux was overshadowed at Wake Forest, playing alongside All-America linebacker Curry, but he ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash among linebackers at the pre-draft scouting combine in Indianapolis -- 4.61 seconds, behind only Curry.

Arnoux played middle linebacker in college, and Wake Forest Coach Jim Grobe said there were several games last season where he "played every bit as good as, if not better than, Aaron Curry."

Vaughn also sung his praises Friday.

"Stan's a very smart Football player," Vaughn said. "Stan's probably the one person I can say that he's always in the right spot. In Sunday film study, he was always the guy that graded out highly every time."

Arnoux will put those cerebral skills to good use this year, using this rookie season to learn the NFL game and learn his new defense in hopes of bouncing back even stronger next year.

The Saints lost two members of their rookie class during training camp last year when defensive tackle DeMario Pressley, a fifth-round pick, suffered a foot injury and receiver Adrian Arrington, a seventh-round pick, suffered a toe injury.
