Playoff fates are on the line this week

Playoff fates are on the line this week
Hey, we all remember watching "The Waterboy" when Dan Fouts kept on saying Adam Sandler's team was laying it all on the line, not holding anything back and pulling out all the stops.

Well, some fantasy owners need a win to get in the playoffs, and drastic times call for drastic measures. (Hey, this is a clich?-driven Fantasy Buzz today.)

So what, you might ask, did TF Buzz do?

Well, Bee sports copy editor Delton Lowery either benched or released all Seattle Seahawks on his team. (When your first live NFL game was at the Kingdome back in the '80s, it doesn't matter where you've lived or what you've done since, the Seahawks are gonna be your team.)

Some people say stocking your lineup with players from your favorite team could be a bad thing. If you pick them smartly, though, it's a different story. We advised against drafting any Seahawks running back because there are a million of them, and we weren't high on Matt Hasselbeck, either, in TF Buzz blogs leading up to the fantasy draft.

But Lowery did have Olindo Mare, who he got rid of a couple of weeks ago for Joe Nedney, who he then got rid of this week for Rian Lindell. (Hey, he's a former Washington State University Cougars kicker, so at least there is some Evergreen State representation in the starting lineup.)

If you're in need, Lindell is owned in only 55% of CBS Sportsline leagues.

Then on Wednesday, Lowery benched John Carlson, who had been struggling when Matt Hasselbeck was out. Lowery really didn't want to wait and see if the Notre Dame rookie would come around Thursday against Dallas -- which, of course, he did, getting a career-high 105 receiving yards. Oh, well, at least he didn't rub it in with a touchdown.

In Carlson's place is 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who is owned in only 36% of Sportsline leagues.

We know interim coach Mike Singletary wants winners, so let's hope Buffalo linebackers can't keep up with the highly-touted-but-yet-to-prove-himself tight end.

Remember, it's win or go home. Gotta pull out all the stops. Time to lay it all on the line!

So what's your story?

What have you resorted to in your bid to stay in the playoff hunt?

We got a response from Bee reader Richard, who e-mailed to offer his take on that question in Wednesday's edition of The Bee.

A portion of Richard's e-mail had this:

I'm in multiple leagues mostly on Yahoo. Most of the leagues I know someone and/or all in the league. I also join two leagues basically to draft before my main leagues, so that I kinda have an idea of where players are being drafted.

I've already clinched or clinched because I'm of ahead on points (two games up with two games left). I've got one league with one game to go. If I win I'm in and if I lose then I have to hope.

(TF Buzz note: Thanks Richard, that sounds like great advice.)

Some last-minute pickups

OK, so we've given you a kicker and a tight end to look at. Here are a couple quick picks on teams that have yet to play this week, with percentages owned in parenthesis:

QB Derek Anderson (46%): New chance after Brady Quinn's injury could be re-invigorating for Browns quarterback who, don't forget, had a breakout 2007.

RB Leon Washington (72%): If there's a slim chance he's available in your league -- he's not in ours, and those who are available aren't good options -- the Jets are facing the porous Broncos run defense this week.

WR Domenik Hixon (14%): An extended opportunity with Plaxico Burress accidentally shooting himself is the opening this deep threat should exploit.
