PACKERS NOTES Driver returns after visiting father in Houston

PACKERS NOTES Driver returns after visiting father in Houston
Green Bay - Wide receiver Donald Driver returned to practice Friday with the Green Bay Packers about the same time that the Houston Police Department took the three officers off the street who have been accused of beating his father.

Driver left Green Bay for Houston early in the week after his father, Marvin, was arrested early Monday because of outstanding warrants and then later hospitalized in critical condition with head and other injuries.

"I just wanted to see my Dad," Driver told reporters after practice. "Plain and simple. Just to make sure he was OK. When I got down there he was doing fine. He's one of those guys that's a tough cookie. He had a smile on his face when I left and told me to get back to work."

Officers Gilberto Cruz, Bacilio Guzman and Matthew Marin were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the incident. Instead of patrol duty, they will work desk jobs.

"We don't only just want their job," Mary Driver told the Houston Chronicle Friday. "We want criminal charges brought up against them because my brother was really hurt, really bad.

"He was totally mistreated and driven around for quite some time. I don't know what it was that made them want to do this."

Marvin Driver remained in good condition Friday, but apparently no date has been set for his discharge from the hospital.

Donald Driver said his father had been able to resume speaking. Earlier, he had a ventilator in his throat but communicated through notes.

Donald Driver had no comment on the actions by Houston police Friday.

"I sat down with my Dad and talked to my Dad the last couple days," he said. "I was trying to get an understanding of exactly what happened. We seemed to get that understanding. When I left yesterday he was doing OK."

Double fines: Cornerback Al Harris and linebacker Desmond Bishop became the latest Packers fined by the National Football League.

Harris was fined $7,500 for unnecessary roughness when he grabbed the facemask of Chicago tight end Greg Olsen in an attempt to tackle him. Bishop was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness when he hit Minnesota punt returner Aundrae Allison out of bounds.

"I don't think it was fair," Bishop said. "I'm appealing it. I already wrote a letter to the commissioner and told him my side of the story. People are getting fined left and right."

Injury list: The New Orleans Saints , who play the Packers Monday night, listed running back Reggie Bush as questionable. As planned, Bush took Friday off after practicing on a limited basis Thursday.

Bush did not suffer a setback, according to coach Sean Payton. He has been out since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Oct. 21 for cartilage damage.

"We're just hopeful that tomorrow is better news than a week ago," Payton said.

Aaron Glenn (ankle) is out, leaving the Saints without three of their top four cornerbacks. Listed as probable were wide receiver Marques Colston (knee), tackle Jon Stinchcomb (calf), center Jonathan Goodwin (knee) and running back Deuce McAllister (knee).

The Packers listed four players as questionable: wide receiver James Jones (knee), running back DeShawn Wynn (calf), cornerback Jarrett Bush (ankle) and safety Charlie Peprah (calf).

Vacancy remains: The Packers tried to fill the opening on their 53-man roster created by Nick Barnett's knee injury but lost out Wednesday in the waiver process.

Green Bay, Seattle, Houston and Denver all put in a waiver claim Wednesday after Atlanta waived defensive end Brandon Miller, a pass-rushing rookie free agent from Georgia.

Miller was awarded to the Seahawks because their 2-8 record left them higher in the claiming order.

On the job: Tackle Mark Tauscher is beginning his second month as the Packers' union player representative. He had been the assistant to long snapper Rob Davis for two years.

After electing Tauscher to replace the retired Davis, players elected Harris as the assistant.

"It's an interesting time, there's no question. For the most part, since the CBAs have continually been renewed, there's always been a little bit of angst but it's been pretty peaceful," Tauscher said, referring to the collective bargaining agreement. "Obviously, there's a lot of key issues now.

"We need to hire a new leader. That will be our No. 1 objective."

Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association, died Aug. 20 of pancreatic cancer.
