"Can't win the big game! ... They said that about Peyton Manning, they said that about Dan Marino, they said it about John Elway, until the last couple of years," Simms said on "Inside the NFL." "Tony Romo has only been a full-time starter for two years. Let's give him a little time to see what happens in his career before we label him the guy that can't get it done in a big spot."
But what they remember around Dallas is Romo fumbling the field goal snap with 1:19 left in the 2006 wild-card playoffs against the Seahawks in what proved to be Bill Parcells' last game on the sidelines. And Romo throwing that end-zone interception to R.W. McQuarters in the final minute of the divisional playoff loss to the Giants. And missing four games this season with that broken right pinkie while Brad Johnson wasn't up to the job. And throwing that killer interception last Sunday in Pittsburgh.
"When he is trying to be Tony Romo, that is not good," Simms said. "You have to see the big picture, what is best for the football team and sometimes, truly not losing the game is more important and better than trying to win it. You have to know when to be extremely careful. He hasn't done that yet in his career."
So the heat's on Romo, from Cowboys fans, from Owens, and tonight, from the world champion Giants, who would love nothing better than The Fall of the Romo Empire at their feet one more time.
