Fans don't take it Lion down
Leave it to the Detroit Lions to flood my inbox with "Reader responses," that section of The Benchwarmer where readers make their own sarcastic/witty/silly/twisted takes about anything and everything.

Not surprisingly, it was the Lions' draft that generated the most traffic over the weekend. Here's a sampling:

Let's start with the most optimistic, from The Gib: "It almost seems that many Lions fans are hoping that Matt Stafford will be a flop, but what if he turns out to be the solid, long-term QB that the Lions have been seeking? ... My gripe is not with the selection of Stafford, but with the Lions' next two choices. I think they needed offensive line and linebacker help, and it seemed like some good players were still out there."

That's a clear, level-headed argument. But here's a more succinct one from Jerry Donovan: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Or as the Lions call it: Draft Day."

And here was the most passionate. From B.C. Jake: "Nice going Detroit. Drafting Stafford is like having Fort Knox made out of straw and security guards with water pistols. There's a lot of value inside, but no way to protect it. That kid is going to spend more time on his back than (removed because we're a family publication)."

And then there's this one, which came in anonymously: "I plan on donating my brain to find an answer to why my life is so hard. You, on the other hand should donate yours to a cause to find why people are just stupid."

He or she just as easily could have been talking about the Lions' front office.

Blandness speaks volumes

The biggest bust of the 2009 NFL draft? Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock nominated a former coach-turned-ESPN ... something: "Herm Edwards, the rookie ESPN analyst and fondly regarded as the Human Sound Bite as an NFL head coach, turned in a disastrous and distracting performance during the two-day NFL draft. Edwards was so bad that my sources in Dallas reported that Emmitt Smith could be heard shouting: 'I would've have did a better job!' "

Well, it is hard to change the spots on a tiger.

Seconds ... and thirds

Former Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry fared better during the draft, going to the Seattle Seahawks with the fourth pick overall. Curry, when asked how he entered school weighing 195 pounds and left weighing 254: "Countless hours in the weight room ... countless hours in the cafeteria."

Let's just assume there still was room for countless hours in the classroom, otherwise we'll just seem pessimistic.

And finally

Bob Molinaro of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot on Andy Roddick marrying swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker: "They met in 2007 when Roddick saw her picture in Sports Illustrated and -- here's the really romantic part -- had his agent contact hers."

Their first date consisted of becoming Facebook friends.
