Cable said to be Raiders' choice

Cable said to be Raiders' choice
The Raiders have chosen Tom Cable as their permanent head coach, according to three league and team sources.

Al Davis "is hiring Tom Cable," a league source with close ties to the Raiders told The Chronicle on Wednesday, shortly after ESPN.com and the NFL Network reported as much.

That very well could come to pass, Raiders senior executive John Herrera said, but he was adamant no contract has been signed and no hire has been made.

"No decision has been made on the head coach and that's the truth of the matter," Herrera said. As for any news conferences today to announce a hire, Herrera said "there's nothing planned."

At this point, this could all be semantics.

Cable has long been considered by many inside the organization and around the league as the clear front-runner. He took over for the fired Lane Kiffin for the final 12 games of last season, going 4-8 but winning three of his final six games and ending the season with consecutive victories.

Cable has certainly acted like the head coach despite being without a contract for two-plus weeks, interviewing potential assistants and representing the team at last week's Senior Bowl. The job came open Sept. 30, but the search did not begin until the season ended Dec. 28.

Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss also interviewed for the job, but that was more than two weeks ago.

If a hire isn't announced by today, the Raiders will most likely wait until next week. The NFL does not like its members to infringe on Super Bowl weekend by making big announcements.

That unofficial dark period begins Friday when Commissioner Roger Goodell gives his state of the league address and ends after Sunday's game.

The Raiders were willing to confirm other hires Wednesday: namely, quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett and defensive line coach Dwaine Board.

They also interviewed John Marshall for the defensive coordinator job. Mike Haluchak also came in about the linebackers position.

Marshall and Haluchak are expected to get the jobs, a league source said, but nothing has been made official - kind of like the Cable situation.

Marshall was fired by the Seahawks after three years as their defensive coordinator. He's also been a defensive coordinator with the Falcons 1983-85, 49ers 1997-98 and Panthers 1999-2001.

Herrera also confirmed Haluchak's candidacy for the linebackers position but would not say when he would interview. According to a league source, Haluchak - a 23-year NFL veteran - was at team headquarters Wednesday, meeting the staff and watching video of the defense.

As for the official hires, Board is a former 49ers player and assistant who spent the past seven seasons with the Seahawks.

Hackett takes over the mentoring of quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a role he has filled throughout his 40-year coaching career. He's been a head coach at USC and an offensive coordinator with the Jets and Chiefs.

With Cable expected to get the job, he will remain as the offensive line coach but could hire an assistant to help. He will also need an offensive coordinator. Cable called the offensive plays during the second half of the season and it is not known if he will continue in that role next season.

Cable will become the team's fifth permanent head coach since 2003.
