Running back Matt Forte pushed his season total past 1,000 rushing yards against Minnesota and now needs just two receptions to become the seventh rookie in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards and catch 50-plus passes. Forte, who is on pace for 1,349 yards and 64 receptions, would join Joe Cribbs (1,185 yards, 52 catches) and Billy Simms (1,303, 51) in 1980, Eric Dickerson (1,808, 51) in 1983, Marshall Faulk (1,282, 52) in 1989, Edgerrin James (1,553, 62) in 1999 and LaDainian Tomlinson (1,236, 59) in 2001.

While Forte has been spectacular, it remains a mystery why the Bears haven't created packages in their offense to feature Kevin Jones, Adrian Peterson or Garrett Wolfe. One scout pointed out that Wolfe's performance on special teams has revealed that ''he's a Football player,'' and deserves a chance to at least catch a pass out of the backfield on occasion. Are the Bears ignoring a possible change-of-pace option?

Brother vs. brother

Peterson mostly makes his contribution on special teams, but he's hoping to get some snaps on offense this week so he can face his brother, Jacksonville linebacker Mike Peterson. Adrian is three years younger than Mike and was limited to a special-teams role the last time they met on a professional field. He grew up idolizing his older brother and said he last went mano-a-mano with him back at Santa Fe (Fla.) High when he was a freshman running on scout team and Mike was a senior coming up on his All-American career at Florida.

''I thought he would come up and be a little easy on me, but he came full speed,'' Adrian laughed. "I hope I can step in on offense and get to bang heads with him a little bit this week.''

Chance for Toeaina

With Dusty Dvoracek lost for the season, the Bears will probably go back to dressing just seven defensive tackles with Anthony Adams and rookie Marcus Harrison expected to get the majority of work in Dvoracek's place. But it might also open the door for Matt Toeaina, who was signed in Week 15 last season from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad and played in the final three games. Toeaina has been inactive for every game.

''That's why they kept me around just in case something like this happens,'' he said. ''I feel bad for Dusty because not only has he been great making plays on the field but he's also a good guy. I know he's going through a lot mentally.''
